AHRC New York City

Advocating for people with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities to lead full and equitable lives.

Our Advocacy Center provides parents with training, information, referral, and support as they seek quality education and services for their children.

Education Advocacy Services

AHRC Education Advocates help families of OPWDD eligible students ages 3-22 resolve complex special education issues. They facilitate communication between families, students and school teams, provide representation at Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings and mediation sessions, help parents and students understand their educational rights under IDEA, assist with securing appropriate evaluations, and much more. Advocates may accompany parents on visits to both public and New York State approved non-public schools and assist with program recommendations. We can also help identify appropriate representation at Resolution Sessions as well as Suspension and Due Process Hearings. We’re here to help!

Parent Training, Outreach, and Workshops

The Education Advocacy Center can provide workshops and trainings to groups of families with OPWDD eligibility who are experiencing difficulty accessing appropriate special education services in New York City Public Schools. We can tailor special education trainings to meet your needs. Contact us!
